Book His Forsaken Bride (Vawdrey Brothers Book 2) Review :

Very little violenceNo cheatingSex 4 (on a scale of 1-5)I loved this story, and I wasn't at all put off by the complexity of the characters or the fact that the hero wasn't always the perfect husband. A good love story should have a little conflict, and make the characters work a bit to find their HEA ending. I thought Oswald was a good, strong, male romantic lead and his rough edges did not ruin his appeal. If going to bed angry in a different room over a misunderstanding is inexcusable, I know of no marriage that could stand up to that level of scrutiny. The thing that prevented me from giving an otherwise well deserved 4 star rating was the writing. There were a lot of missing or incorrect nouns and pronouns. There were quite a few redundancies (for example: "...casting down his pen down in frustration"). Some mistakes were so frequent I was trying to figure out if there was some explanation for it. She kept writing "was stood" as in "Oswald was stood on the threshold" or "we were stood under the oak tree." Same thing with "was sat" as in "Wymer was sat in a claw-footed chair" and "was lay" as in "she was lay on her side." Lots of other mistakes are peppered throughout the book. At one point Lady Vawdrey is married to the Duke of Vawdrey. I could go on and on, but you get the point. It also felt like there were a few lose ends or unresolved mysteries at the end. I don't want to give anything away, so I will leave it at that. I really did think the story was great, and if you can get over the problems with the writing it is well worth the read.
Alice Coldbreath truly is becoming one of my favourite authors! She has a very good voice in her writing and I love her stories!!The second book in the Vawdrey series is about the eldest son Oswald. In the first book we learn that he is different from his brothers and father since he prefers court intrigue and manipulating events from the shadows before fighting. We also learned that he has gone through a number of betrothals, all arranged by his father and subsequently broken. The book starts a few years after the events of the first book. Oswald is now the spymaster and closest advisor to the king and is a bit troubled because he hears a rumour that the king wants to marry of his latest mistress to Oswald. Oswald is a confirmed bachelor with no room in his life for anything but his ambitions so he is not overjoyed at the prospect of marrying the kings lover and having her eventual illegitimate children as his own.In enters the heroine!! God I liked her, she was no raving beauty or supercapable superwoman. She was quirky and shy but without guile and she was trying to make the best of her situation. Fen was the first girl Oswald was betrothed to. She was 12 and he 19, she was very infatuated with him and was heartbroken when his father and her father broke off the engagement. She married another when she was 18 and 8 years later she is chocked when her absentee husband wants to divorce her and send her to a convent.Fens solution is to find the old betrothal papers between her and Oswald and convince him that he owes her help in this situation.Things don't really turn out as she had intended but oh did they turn out for the better. Oswald sees a solution to his problems in her and uses her divorce to his advantage. What follows is a heroine who realizes that even though the eldest Vawdrey is not the same as she remembered, he still inspires alot of emotion in her. A hero who thought he could stuff away his unasuming new wife in the country but cant seem to let her go anywhere out of his sight.-No others after meeting.-Celibate H (at least 10 years)- h celibate for at least 2 years (her husband had been away for that time but there wasnt much mention of their marital bed)- Possessive, jealous, overbearing H. It was so cute how he hated her first husband on principle.- More of Mason and Linnet!!!!I look forward to Rolands book! (even though I was not superexcited to see the rumpled tavern wench leave his room).
